(VOVWORLD) - The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) welcomed Israel's decision on Sunday to suspend daily fighting in the southern Gaza Strip to facilitate the delivery of aid.

The agency said it hopes this decision by Israel will pave the way for more concrete measures to facilitate humanitarian assistance to Gaza.
The Israeli army announced a temporary suspension of military operations along the route from Kerem Shalom border gate to Salah al-Din road and further north, effective from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. daily until further notice.
This action was taken in response to warnings about the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. Over the past eight months, Israel has frequently declared “tactical ceasefires” in certain areas of the Gaza Strip, typically lasting only a few hours, to allow Palestinian civilians to receive humanitarian aid.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday that Israel will persist in its commitment to defeat Hamas.
