(VOVWORLD) - US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced on Friday a 6 billion USD long-term military aid package for Ukraine — the largest to date — and the second installment from 61 billion USD allocated for Ukraine that was recently passed by Congress and signed into law by President Joe Biden.
The new aid package “will include critical interceptors for Ukraine’s patriot and NASAMS air defense systems, more counter drone systems and support equipment, significant amounts of artillery ammunition, and air to ground munitions and maintenance and sustainment support,” Secretary Austin said at a press conference.
The US has been a key military backer of Ukraine since its conflict with Russia broke out in 2022. But in 2023, its military aid to Ukraine was as low as 10 billion USD. So far this year, the US has sent just one military aid package to Ukraine, worth 300 million USD.
Ukraine has repeatedly asked Western allies for more air defense systems. Several countries, including France and Germany, have pledged to provide Ukraine with advanced Patriot and NASAMS air defense systems.
