US, France work on ‘new nuclear deal’ with Iran
(VOVWORLD) - US President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron pledged on Tuesday to seek stronger measures to contain Iran, but Trump refrained from committing to staying in a 2015 nuclear deal and threatened Tehran with retaliation if it restarts its nuclear program.
At a joint press conference, President Macron said he and President Trump discussed a new deal which promotes the 2015 nuclear pact and suits Trump’s intention to contain Iran’s ballistic missile program and influence in the region.
President Macron said the new deal includes blocking nuclear activities in Iran in the short and long term, halting Iran's ballistic missile program, limiting Iran’s presence in the region, and pursuing political solutions to conflicts in Syria.
President Trump warned that Tehran will face “big problems" if it restarts its nuclear program.
Iran has vowed to not return to the negotiating table and said it will resume its nuclear program if the US withdraws from the 2015 nuclear deal.
