Kim, a Korean-born American, served as US Ambassador to the Republic of Korea from 2011 to 2014, and became special representative for North Korea policy in 2014. He is considered an experienced diplomat, especially on Northeast Asia issues.
US Ambassador to Malaysia Joseph Yun is regarded as a potential candidate to succeed Kim as US special representative for North Korea policy, according to a US government official. If approved, Yun would head the US delegation to the six-party talks on North Korea issues should the talks resume.
