US tightens restrictions on Huawei’s access to technology
(VOVWORLD) - The Trump administration announced Monday it will further tighten restrictions on Huawei Technologies, clamping down on the Chinese telecom giant’s access to commercially available chips.
The US Commerce Department will expand restrictions announced in May aimed at preventing Huawei from obtaining semiconductors without a special license — including chips made by foreign firms that have been developed or produced using US software or technology.
The Commerce Department added 38 Huawei affiliates to the US government’s blacklist. That raises the total to 152 affiliates since Huawei was first added in May 2019.
White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows said President Trump is looking to ban other Chinese apps that might collect personal information and represent a potential national security risk. The list includes ByteDance, owner of Tiktok, and Tencent, which owns texting app WeChat.
