US President Barack Obama pledged to strengthen the US military presence in the Asia-Pacific region despite fiscal constraints when he unveiled a revamped national defense strategy on Thursday. In the new strategy, the US will continue confronting threats by extremists and terrorists, maintaining a minimum military presence of the US and its allies, and to support partners in and around the Middle East . The strategy stresses that the US will develop low-cost and small-footprint approaches to achieving its security objectives, invest in means to combat weapons of mass destruction. It also calls for the US military to re-balance toward the Asia-Pacific region. The plan shifts slightly from the Pentagon’s decades-old strategy of being prepared to fight two major regional land wars at once. But Panetta said the US will maintain the ability to confront multiple enemies.
