Deputy Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung granted an interview to the press on the outcomes of the visit where he said Vietnam and Japan are extensive strategic partners, adding that Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc’s official visit to Japan has contributed to deepening bilateral ties.

He said that the two sides reached consensus on major orientations and specific measures to boost relations in all aspects: politics, economics, trade, culture, and education.

The two sides agreed to intensify political trust and maintain high-level visits and meetings and committed to closely coordinate with each other at multilateral forums.

Japan said it stands ready to provide more patrol ships for Vietnam to boost the capacity of its law enforcement forces.

Both sides agreed on the importance of ensuring peace, security, and maritime and aviation safety and freedom in the East Sea, and refraining from unilateral actions, including militarization or changing the status quo that further complicate or expand maritime disputes.

Trung said that the two countries also agreed that disputes should be settled through peaceful means with full respect for diplomatic and legal processes and international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), while fully and effectively implementing the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) and striving for the early conclusion of a Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC).

Trung added that Japan pledged to continue its ODA to Vietnam with priority given to reform, infrastructure construction, personnel training, and climate change response.

According to the Deputy Minister, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc’s attendance at the Future of Asia Conference has contributed to raising Vietnam’s profile in international issues including globalization, free trade facilitation, and sustainable and inclusive development.
