(VOVWORLD) - Vietnam’s Olympic football team made history with its first entrance into the ASIAD semi-finals, defeating Syria 1-0 in the quarterfinal match in Indonesia on Monday.
The Vietnamese Olympic football team will meet South Korea at the semifinals on August 29, 2018.

Van Toan scored the only goal of the match in the 109th minute, helping Vietnam advance to the semifinals where it will meet South Korea on Wednesday. Midfielder Nguyen Quang Hai said: "We are happy with this victory, which was made by our united efforts. We’ll continue practicing for the upcoming semi-finals and try not to let our fans down".
Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc personally congratulated coach Park Hang Seo and his team on their victory. The Voice of Vietnam awarded the squad 22,000 USD.
Minutes after Vietnam beat Syria, Fox Sports Asia posted on its Facebook page the message ‘Vietnam has done it again!’ The post pointed out that South Korea has given up 14 goals in four games while Vietnam has given up none.
The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) ran the headline “Super sub Van Toan strikes to take Vietnam through” over an article praising coach Park’s effective tactics, which helped his team advance to the semi-finals without conceding a single goal.
