Early this week, it was recognized as a world heritage site by a unanimous vote at the 38th meeting of the UNESCO Heritage Committee. Lien, who was leader of the Vietnamese delegation to the meeting, said the Trang An complex was Vietnam’s first mixed natural and cultural property recognized by UNESCO.

Deputy Minister Lien said: “The committee applauded Vietnam’s dossier on the Trang An scenic landscape complex. 10 years ago, Ninh Binh provincial authorities invited foreign archeologists to conduct an archeological study which has proven that prehistoric men lived in the Trang An area. The archeologists wrote 25 scientific papers testifying to Vietnam’s long cultural history. The committee considered the Trang An area one of the few world scenic landscape complexes that have preserved their pristine natural value. UNESCO Heritage Committee consultants praised the Trang An complex as one of the most wonderful sites in Southeast Asia.”
