(VOVWORLD) - In the face of unprecedented challenges and damage caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Vietnam is determined to put its people at the center of policies, strengthen the health system's response to the pandemic, and implement social and financial support programs of an appropriate scale to ensure people’s basic needs and rights.

The statement was made by Nguyen Phuong Anh, Deputy Permanent Representative of Viet Nam to the UN, WTO, and other international organizations in Geneva at the UN Human Rights Council’s session on global human rights on Tuesday.

In the post-COVID period, realizing and protecting human rights for all people will require a shift in approach and priorities, so Vietnam is calling on the UN Security Council to join the recovery mission to achieve sustainable development goals once the pandemic subsides.

The 48th session of the UN Human Rights Council began Monday, attended by representatives of 47 member countries and more than 100 observers, intergovernmental organizations, and NGOs based in Geneva. The 4-week session will include 40 major discussions and dialogues, and conduct Universal Periodic Reviews of 15 countries.
