(VOVWORLD) - The United Nations General Assembly held a high-level session on Thursday and Friday on road traffic safety improvement to promote cooperation and evaluate the results of road traffic safety measures within the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Tra, Charge d'affaires a.i. of Vietnam to the UN, said that Vietnam fully supports a Decade of Action 2021-2030 on road safety. In order to achieve the goal of reducing road traffic accidents by 50%, the Ambassador said that it is necessary to strengthen national legal documents on road safety, and globally address current and emerging challenges.
In addition, more investment is needed in infrastructure development and road safety capacity in low- and middle-income countries, where 90% of traffic accidents occur.
Ambassador Tra underscored the need to build traffic safety culture through education and improve people’s awareness of obeying traffic laws such as wearing seat belts and helmets, and not driving while under the influence of alcohol and stimulants. It’s necessary to apply information technology to ensure road safety.
The Ambassador said that Vietnam ratified the National Strategy on road traffic order and safety for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2045. The aim is to reduce the number of deaths and those injured in traffic accidents by 5-10% per year, building safe, modern and environmentally-friendly infrastructure and means of transport, and enhancing international cooperation in this field.
