Since 2014, the US Institute of Peace (USIP) has provided Vietnam with 800,000 pages of documents and a large number of materials related to its soldiers, helping the country collect 17,000 martyrs’ remains, according to a seminar in Hanoi on Tuesday.

Vietnam, under a cooperation program with the USIP, has received 38,000 samples of remains, 23,000 DNA testing samples, and identified more than 4,000 martyrs’ remains. Participants said insufficient and incorrect information about unknown war martyrs in and outside the country challenges Vietnam to repatriate martyrs’ remains.

Dr. Andrew Wells-Dang, head of the Vietnam War Legacies and Reconciliation Initiative at the USIP, said that the Institute looks to promote dialogue and uphold the roles of social organizations and government agencies in searching, collecting, and identifying the remains of Vietnamese war martyrs.
