Vietnam wants to join world peacekeeping efforts

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh told UN Under-Secretary-General for Field Support Ameerah Haq in Hanoi on Monday that 2 Vietnamese liaison officers will start their operation in the UN Mission in South Sudan from June, 2014, and Vietnam is building a legal framework for its participation in UN peace-keeping operations.

Haq, who is in Vietnam to witness the inauguration of Vietnam Center for Peacekeeping, applauded Vietnam’s contributions to global peace, security, cooperation, and development, especially its commitment to actively taking part in UN peace-keeping activities. She pledged UN support to Vietnam in this field.

In talks with Haq earlier, Defense Minister Phung Quang Thanh expressed his hope that the UN will assist Vietnam in personnel training and share its experience in peacekeeping operation.
