(VOVWORLD) - Party General Secretary and President To Lam had meetings with leaders of a number of international organizations in New York on Tuesday as part of his US trip.

Meeting UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Lam praised the increasingly important role of the UN in global governance, promoting multilateral cooperation, upholding international law, narrowing the gap and promoting development, and ensuring full participation of all countries.
They reached consensus on cooperation measures for promoting sustainable development, putting the 2030 Agenda back on track, speeding up energy transition, enhancing capacity to effectively respond to global challenges, and further increasing Vietnam's participation in UN peacekeeping activities in the future.
Speaking about the severe impact of Typhoon Yagi, General Secretary and President To Lam urged the United Nations to strengthen cooperation to enhance countries' capacities in disaster resilience, response, and risk management. He also called on the UN Secretary-General to continue prioritizing cooperation in energy transition, green transformation, digital transformation, and the development of digital governance systems, with a focus on safeguarding the interests of developing countries, including Vietnam.

Meeting with President of the 79th United Nations General Assembly Philemon Yang, the Party and State leader affirmed that Vietnam will actively support his leadership, initiatives, and priorities for the current term. Lam stated that Vietnam remains steadfast in its strong support for multilateralism, with the UN playing a central role in global governance and the UN General Assembly considered the most important body comprising all member states. Vietnam supports the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), he said.
At the meeting with Achim Steiner, Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Lam proposed the UNDP focus on supporting Vietnam in terms of knowledge and resources, promoting the transfer of science and technology aimed at building a green economy and circular economy.
Talking to UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell, the top Vietnamese leader called for UNICEF’s policy advice and support packages for Vietnam to ensure the best care, protection, and education for children in areas affected by Typhoon Yagi.
The same day, General Secretary and President To Lam met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen.

During his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, General Secretary and President To Lam called for an end to the conflict, the restoration of peace, and the protection of the security and safety of people and essential infrastructure. He affirmed Vietnam’s readiness to contribute to dialogue and efforts to find solutions that stabilize the situation for regional and global peace. He also emphasized Vietnam's willingness to join the international community in supporting Ukraine's reconstruction once the conflict ends.
At a meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Lam suggested that both sides continue to effectively implement the Vietnam-EU Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA), including the prompt removal of the European Commission's yellow card and continued support for Vietnam in implementing measures against illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing.
