Vietnam’s Ministry of Health receives international award on tobacco control

(VOVWORLD) -The Health Ministry of Vietnam has won an award from the Bloomberg Philanthropies for its efforts in monitoring tobacco use and prevention policies. The country is among six winners, alongside El Salvador, Mexico, Senegal, Uganda and Argentina.

WHO Global Representative for Noncommunicable Diseases, Michael Bloomberg, congratulated the winners and Vietnam for outstanding results in overseeing tobacco use and implementing policy on tobacco effect prevention and control. At the award ceremony, Minister of Health Nguyen Thi Kim Tien thanked the World Health Organisation, the Bloomberg Philanthropies and domestic and international organisations for their support for Vietnam in the fight against tobacco harms and non-communicable diseases.

Vietnam’s Law on Tobacco Prevention and Control bans all smoking in indoor public spaces along with tobacco advertisements, promotion and sponsorship, among other stipulations. The Ministry of Health has helped with the establishment of the Vietnam Tobacco Control Fund with mandatory contributions from tobacco production and trading companies.
