Vietnam’s rice mutant wins IAEA honor
(VOVworld) – Vietnam’s Agricultural Genetics Institute was honored by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) last week for its rice mutant varieties. Vietnam won 3 of the 23 prizes awarded by IAEA for achievements in radiation-supported plant breeding which have helped to ensure food security and sustainable growth. The awards were made on the 50th anniversary of joint efforts by the IAEA and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to apply nuclear techniques in food and agriculture.

The award ceremony took place during the 58th annual session of the IAEA General Conference, which adopted 15 resolutions and 4 decisions on 2015 finance, personnel, and regulation amendments. The conference approved a 350-million-euro budget for 2015 with 70 million euros earmarked for a technique assistance program. Vietnam will contribute 108,000 euros to the IAEA budget.
