The editorial says that since Russia implemented its Look East policy in the early 21^st century, Vietnam has become the most important strategic partner in Southeast Asia with China holding that distinction in East Asia. The two countries also lifted bilateral relations to comprehensive strategic partnership in 2012.

Meanwhile, US-based Pew Research Center featured an article about the increasingly important role of Vietnam within ASEAN, describing Vietnam as an economic link between Russia and other Southeast Asian nations.
