The tobacco-related diseases killed 100 million people in the 20^th century and this number can be up to 1 billion in the 21^st century if there is no effective methods to prevent.

WHO Director-General Dr Margaret Chan said on Wednesday at the World No Tobacco Day that about 20 percent of world’s population smoke, especially in the Europe, the Latin America and some Asian countries, and the age of smokers are more and more younger. She also called on state leaders around the world to be more vigilant to attacks by the tobacco production industry to neutralize global anti-smoking campaigns.

On this occasion, the WHO has publicized technical documents and legal guidelines to fight against legal tactics set by tobacco producers. WHO has appealed Governments not to provide any preferential treatments to the tobacco indsutry and set up a fire wall against possible intervention of the sector.
