Austria says ISIS involved in Vienna terror attack

(VOVWORLD) - Austria’s top security official accused the Islamic State (ISIS) of opening fire at multiple locations in central Vienna late Monday that killed at least four people, including a police officer, and wounded several more.

Interior Minister Karl Nehammer said Tuesday that a suspected attacker was also shot and killed by police. He was identified as an ISIS sympathiser carrying an assault rifle and a fake suicide vest. Police have launched a manhunt searching for at least one more assailant still at large.

Witnesses described the men firing into crowds in bars with automatic rifles, as many people took advantage of the last evening before a nationwide curfew due to COVID-19. Austria’s military has provided 75 soldiers to guard key sites in Vienna, freeing up police to continue the investigation.

The attack drew swift condemnation and assurances of support from leaders around Europe.
