Countries seek US trade talks after tariffs

(VOVWORLD) - South Korea's trade minister said on Tuesday that the government has been considering measures to increase imports from the United States as he headed to Washington to negotiate over US tariffs.

Minister Cheong In-kyo will negotiate with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and other officials on steel and auto tariffs during his US visit as they are both major export items for South Korea.

Swiss State Secretary for Economic Affairs Helene Budliger Artieda on Monday arrived in Washington for tariff negotiations.

Greer said that nearly 50 countries have approached him to discuss new sweeping tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump. Several of these countries have suggested they will reduce their tariffs and non-tariff barriers, Greer said, adding that these obviously are welcome moves.

He noted that the US trade deficit had been growing for over 30 years and wouldn’t be fixed quickly, but things were heading in the right direction.
