(VOVworld) – Vietnamese Ambassador to Belgium and Luxembourg Pham Sanh Chau has said that China’s illegal deployment of oil-rig Hai Yang 981 within Vietnam’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and continental self contradicts the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC).

At a meeting Monday with ambassadors from diplomatic corps in Brussels, Chau noted that China’s actions have jeopardized regional peace, security, and maritime safety. The ambassadors unanimously agreed on the Vietnamese ambassador’s call to strongly protest China’s illegal act.
The same day, the Vietnamese Mission to the EU also sent a diplomatic note and press release to EU bodies to inform them about China’s serious violation of Vietnam’s Exclusive Economic Zone. The EU bodies include the European Council, the European Commission, the European Parliament, the European External Action Service (EEAS), the missions of EU member countries, the diplomatic corps, research institutes, and foreign press agencies in Brussels.
