(VOVWORLD) - Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said at a meeting with foreign ambassadors in Tehran on Thursday that Iran has never sought to develop nuclear weapons, emphasizing that the mass killing of innocent people is strictly forbidden under the Islamic Republic’s doctrine.

Pezeshkian also said Iran will take steps to facilitate the verification of its nuclear program to prove that it is not pursuing nuclear weapons.
US President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he would like to reach a verified nuclear peace agreement with Iran, despite having signed an executive order one day earlier reinstating a "maximum pressure" policy against Tehran.
Pezeshkian’s statement came just a day after a senior Iranian official indicated that Iran is open to giving the United States an opportunity to resolve current disagreements.
