US reaffirms commitment to denuclearizing North Korea

(VOVWORLD) - The White House on Tuesday reiterated its commitment to North Korea’s denuclearization following Pyongyang’s test launch of multiple ballistic missiles into the Yellow Sea earlier the same day. This marked North Korea’s first missile test since US President Donald Trump took office on January 20.

White House National Security Council spokesman James Hewitt referenced a statement from the US Indo-Pacific Command, noting that the missile launch posed no direct threat to US personnel, territory, or its allies. He reaffirmed Washington’s unwavering commitment to defending South Korea and Japan.

The United States is currently in close consultation with Seoul, Tokyo, and regional allies regarding Pyongyang’s actions.

North Korea’s missile test coincided with the start of the annual US-South Korea joint military exercises, “Freedom Shield,” an 11-day large-scale drill. Pyongyang has strongly opposed these exercises, arguing that they could further escalate tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
