The Voice of Russia quoted Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Monday as saying that “Russia supports maximising international efforts in the fight against terrorism”. Islamic State announced that it would take the strategic town of Kobane at any cost, despite heavy airstrikes conducted by the US-led coalition. In a video posted on a website linked to Islamic State, IS militants said that they controlled the town’s centre and several buildings, including Kobane’s cultural centre, and would not stop until they had taken full control of Kobane. IS militants attacked the Kurdish town of Qara Tapah in northern Baghdad, 30 kilometres from Iran’s border, killing at least 10 people including 3 civilians. IS is also besieging some 700 Yazidi families in the mountainous area of Sinjar, western Mosul province. 5,000 Yazidis have been killed by IS, 7,000 people have been abducted, and 350,000 people were forced to flee their homes and seek refuge in the Kurdish areas of northern Iraq.
