NA Chairman meets IPU President and Secretary General

(VOVWORLD) -While attending the 150th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU-150) in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man on Sunday met with IPU President Tulia Ackson and IPU Secretary General Martin Chungong.

At the meetings, Chairman Man affirmed that Vietnam values the role of the IPU and multilateralism and emphasized that Vietnam has actively participated in and contributed responsibly to IPU activities, notably the successful hosting of the 132nd IPU General Assembly in 2015 and the 9th Global Conference of Young Parliamentarians in 2023 in Hanoi.

The National Assembly Chairman asked the IPU to continue supporting Vietnam in hosting IPU events in the future. He expressed his hope that both sides would actively implement the IPU's Action Strategy for the 2022-2026 period, focusing on innovation and digital transformation in parliamentary activities.

The top legislator asked the IPU to continue supporting Vietnam in policy advice and expertise in promoting and monitoring the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

IPU President Tulia Ackson expressed her impression of Vietnam's development achievements and its decision to exempt all tuition fees for students from kindergarten to high school nationwide.

Ackson said that as a Tanzanian, she hopes that the Tanzanian National Assembly and the Vietnamese National Assembly will strengthen cooperation, promote contacts and delegation exchanges between professional agencies of the two legislative bodies, between parliamentarians, as well as share legislative experiences between the two countries.

Meanwhile, IPU Secretary General Martin Chungong applauded the contributions of the Vietnamese National Assembly to the IPU, citing the hosting of the 132nd IPU General Assembly in 2015 with the historic Hanoi Declaration, which helped the IPU become the first international organization to mention the Sustainable Development Goals.

The IPU Secretary General affirmed continued support for the Vietnamese National Assembly in building multilateral parliamentary diplomacy capacity and applying science and technology in legislative work.
