State nuclear power company Energoatom said the reactor was disconnected from the electricity grid early Sunday to prevent internal damage to the generator. The contamination level remained safe and the other five reactors remained in operation.
Located in southeast Ukraine, Zaporizhia is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe and the fifth largest in the world. The plant is capable of generating 6,000 megawatts of electricity, producing 40 percent of Ukraine's total nuclear power consumption.
