The proposal drafted by France was circulated to the UN over the weekend and a vote could take place this week, diplomats said. Under the resolution, the UN would take further measures if any side fails to comply. The proposal urges UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to present options for a mechanism to monitor the ceasefire with help from the 23 countries backing the peace process, and demands that all parties to the conflict immediately comply.
The US suspended talks with Russia on Monday on implementing a ceasefire agreement in Syria and accused Moscow of not living up to its commitments under the September 9 ceasefire deal. US State Department spokesman John Kirby said the US will continue to communicate with the Russian military to ensure that they do not come into conflict with each other in counter-terrorism campaigns in Syria.
