Under-Secretary-General and the UN Secretary-General's Envoy on Technology Amandeep Singh Gill met with Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the UN on Wednesday, in New York.
The Under-Secretary-General said he is impressed by Vietnam's efforts in responding to challenges and seizing opportunities to achieve great strides in innovation, digital transformation, artificial intelligence (AI) and ensuring cybersecurity, including the active participation of the private sector, especially large tech companies like Viettel, FPT, and VinAI.
Vietnam’s AI research and application centers rank among the top 20 globally outside of China and are backed by a strong team of talented and dedicated technology experts, Amandeep Singh Gill said. He expected that Vietnam would continue its active role in the UN Expert Group and the Policy Dialogue on AI Governance mechanisms.
Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang emphasized that Vietnam regards science, technology, and innovation as strategic priorities for achieving high economic growth, targeting double-digit growth in the coming years towards becoming a modern industrialized country by 2030 and a high-income nation by 2045.
Giang reaffirmed Vietnam’s commitment to sharing its experience and welcoming opinions from the UN and Under-Secretary-General Gill. He voiced support for the idea of positioning Vietnam as an important axis of digital transformation and AI cooperation and called on the UN to help realize this idea. Vietnam, he added, stays ready to take on a more active role and make greater contributions to UN major events and discussions on digital transformation and AI governance.
