(VOVworld) – The Speaker of the Australian House of Representatives, Brownwyn Bishop, said that the Australian Parliament valued co-operation and discussions with the Vietnamese National Assembly and hoped that the two countries’ legislative bodies would play a greater role in improving bi-lateral ties.

Bishop was speaking while hosting a reception for the Vietnamese Ambassador to Australia Luong Thanh Nghi on Wednesday. Bishop praised the development of bi-lateral ties in recent years and the contribution of the Vietnamese community in Australia to the country’s development and to bi-lateral ties with Vietnam. She also highlighted the positive impression of Vietnamese people and country through her former visits there.
Regarding China’s illegal deployment of oil-rig Hai Yang 981 within Vietnam’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and continental shelf, Bishop expressed her deep concern and repeated the Australian government’s stance over the East Sea situation, emphasizing the importance of respecting international law for regional peace, stability, security, and maritime safety.
