Yoshihide Suga elected president of Japan's ruling LDP to succeed Abe Shinzo
(VOVWORLD) - Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga was electedas the new president of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) on Monday, taking over for Prime Minister Abe Shinzo, who announced his resignation last month due to illness.

535 votes were casted, including 394 LDP lawmakers plus three representatives from the prefectural chapters. Suga won 377 votes, for a commanding lead over his two rivals, former Defense Minister Shigeru Ishiba with 68 votes and former Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida, who is currently LDP Policy Research Council Chairman, with 89 votes.
An extraordinary Diet session will be convened on Wednesday to vote on the LDP’s new president as the new Prime Minister.
