Steven Cheung, White House communications director, told reporters the two leaders had met privately and had "a very productive discussion. More details about the meeting will follow".

The two leaders, leaning in close to each other with no aides around them while seated in St Peter's Basilica, spoke for about 15 minutes, according to Zelenskiy's office.

This is the first time President Trump and President Zelensky have met since the White House heated argument in February. It came as Trump has been urging Ukraine to reach a peace deal with Russia.

President Trump posted to Truth Social on Friday, “Work on the overall Peace Deal between Russia and Ukraine is going smoothly. SUCCESS seems to be in the future!”
