The initiative, introduced at the COP26 climate talks in Glasgow, Scotland, was backed by more than 80 countries. It could set a model for how wealthy countries can help less advantaged ones to reduce their emissions and meet the goal of capping global warming at 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial norms.

Linking the grids would allow parts of the world with excess renewable power to share with areas lacking the same resource. For instance, countries where the sun has set could draw power from others still able to generate solar electricity.

Experts agree that it’s necessary to have more renewable energy transmission grids because renewable power stations are often built far from cities.

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi said connecting cross-border power grids will be an important solution toward a green and clean world in the future.
