Vietnam, Laos give top priority to strengthening bilateral relations

(VOVWORLD) - Vietnamese and Lao leaders have reaffirmed their commitment to giving top priority to the great friendship, special solidarity, and comprehensive cooperation between the two countries.

During a meeting in Vientiane on Friday, visiting President Luong Cuong and President of the Lao National Assembly Saysomphone Phomvihane agreed to maintain regular high-level exchanges, actively implement high-level agreements, closely coordinate with and support each other at regional and international forums, and support each other's positions on international and regional issues in accordance with the interests and concerns of each country, in harmony with the common stance of ASEAN.

They appreciated the joint efforts to compile and publish the book "50 years of relations between the Vietnamese National Assembly and the Lao National Assembly".

At a meeting the same day, President Cuong and Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone emphasized the need to make economic, trade, and investment ties a key pillar of bilateral relations, aiming to raise two-way trade to 5 billion USD in the coming years, with an immediate target of a 10-15% increase this year.

They agreed to further strengthen cooperation in defense and security, combating terrorism and transnational crimes, and searching and repatriating remains of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts who died in Laos.

President Cuong asked the Lao side to continue creating favorable conditions for the Vietnamese community in Laos.
