(VOVWORLD) - Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has ordered retaliatory measures to protect national interests following US President Donald Trump's announcement of a 25% tariff on Mexican imports.

In X social media post on Saturday, Sheinbaum said that she had asked the Economy Minister to implement "Plan B" which encompasses tariff and non-tariff measures to protect national interests. However, she emphasized Mexico's preference for cooperation and dialogue over confrontation.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Saturday a 25% tariff on up to 106.5 billion USD worth of US goods in response. The first round of tariffs, affecting 30 billion USD in goods, will take effect on Tuesday, with a second round targeting 125 billion USD in goods to follow 21 days later.
China's Ministry of Commerce and Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement on Sunday expressing strong dissatisfaction and opposition to the 10% tariff imposed by Washington on Chinese exports. Beijing called the decision wrongful and vowed to file a complaint with the WTO and take retaliatory measures.
US President Trump's top trade advisor, Peter Navarro, warned Saturday that the US would likely raise tariffs further if Mexico, Canada, or China retaliated. President Trump recently signed an executive order imposing a 10% tariff on all imports from China and a 25% tariff on most goods from Canada and Mexico, effective at 0:01 on February 4. He warned of further tariff increases in response to any retaliatory measures.
