Trump signs order designating English as the official language of the US
(VOVWORLD) - President Donald Trump signed an executive order on March 1, officially designating English as the official language of the United States.
This marks the first time in US history that a federal-level official language has been established. Previously, while the US had no official language at the national level, more than 30 states had already recognized English as their official language.
Under the executive order, government agencies and federally funded organizations can decide whether to continue providing documents and services in English or other languages. The order also revokes a 2000 directive issued by former President Bill Clinton, which required government agencies and federally funded organizations to offer language assistance to individuals with limited English proficiency.
President Trump stated that recognizing English as the official language would help reinforce national values and promote a more unified and efficient society.
