US to decide this week whether to continue Ukraine-Russia peace efforts

(VOVWORLD) - US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Sunday that reaching a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine must happen soon, emphasizing that Washington is evaluating the viability of continuing its mediation efforts.

Rubio told NBC News that the US cannot continue to devote time and resources to this effort if it is not going to succeed, noting that this week is going to be a very important week.

He said the US has delayed sanctions on Russia to facilitate diplomatic efforts, but the Trump administration has other options for responding to any party that opposes the peace agreement.

The statement came one day after US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met in Rome during the funeral of Pope Francis. Both sides described the meeting as productive but did not provide further details.
