Vietnam unswervingly considers Japan its top partner, says PM

(VOVWORLD) -Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru held talks after the official welcoming ceremony at the Presidential Palace in Hanoi on Monday.

At the talks, the two Prime Ministers pledged to maintain annual high-level exchanges and contacts, and increase exchanges on all channels and levels, so as to strengthen political trust, an important foundation of the Vietnam-Japan relationship. Amid the current world and regional situation, Prime Minister called on the two countries unite more closely and effectively to respond to global issues.

"We unswervingly consider Japan as a top partner and a comprehensive, long-term strategic partner in all fields, as well as firmly support Japan to keep developing strongly and prosperously and promote its increasingly active role in maintaining peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and in the world," he went on. 

Prime Minister Chinh proposed that Japan continue to support Vietnam in training high-quality human resources; increase the provision of scholarships for international students; support the community of 70 enterprises and 5,000 IT engineers of Vietnam to actively participate in Japan's IT supply chain and digital transformation process.

Prime Minister Ishiba said Japan will support joint research projects and PhD training in semiconductors in Vietnam through the Japan-ASEAN Science, Technology and Innovation Cooperation Project. He announced that Japan has committed to implementing 15 projects in energy transition worth more than 20 billion USD within the framework of the Asian Energy Transition Initiative and the Asian Net Zero Emission Community.

Both agreed to accelerate new-generation ODA cooperation for strategic projects; set specific progress for many projects that are symbolic of the bilateral relationship like Vietnam-Japan University, Cho Ray Hospital 2, and projects of the Vietnam Space Center. The two sides agreed to boost high-tech agricultural cooperation coupled with ensuring the food supply chain, signing the Medium and Long-term Vision on Agricultural Cooperation for the period 2025-2030 in 2025. They agreed on the target of 2 million tourists traveling between the two countries per year.

Prime Minister Chinh and Prime Minister Ishiba then witnessed the handover of four cooperation documents, including Memorandum of Understanding on research and development cooperation in the semiconductor sector; Memorandum of Understanding on human resource development cooperation in semiconductor; Framework Agreement on teaching Japanese in Vietnamese high schools; Memorandum of Understanding on bilateral cooperation projects in energy transition.

After the talks, the two Prime Ministers announced the outcomes of their talks during a joint press conference. The two sides issued a joint press release detailing the results of the visit to Vietnam by Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru.
