(VOVWORLD) -Pyongyang launched multiple unidentified ballistic missiles toward the Yellow Sea on Monday, according to the South Korean military.

Seoul’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said DPRK forces launched the missiles from an inland area of Hwanghae province at around 1:50 p.m. Monday, local time, but didn’t give any detailed information.
The move came as the US and the Republic Of Korea kicked off large-scale springtime joint exercises called “Freedom Shield”. The drills mark the first large-scale joint exercise since US President Donald Trump began his second term on January 20.
Scheduled to last until March 20, the drills will include computer simulations and field training to enhance interoperability between the two countries' forces.
The South Korean JCS said the country will deploy about 19,000 troops and the two sides are expected to conduct 16 large-scale field exercises, a significant increase from the 10 exercises held last year.
