Local authorities shared this update with Vietnamese Ambassador to the UK, Do Minh Hung, during his recent visit to Newhaven, a town in East Sussex’s Lewes District. Newhaven holds historical significance as the port where Nguyen Tat Thanh—later known as Ho Chi Minh—arrived while working on the French Newhaven-Dieppe ferry after World War I.

The statue was a gift from the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum Management Board to Newhaven Museum via the Vietnamese Embassy in the UK in 2013, marking the 100th anniversary of Ho Chi Minh’s arrival in Britain. This is the second restoration of the exhibit, following an earlier refurbishment in 2023.

During his visit, Ambassador Hung reaffirmed the Vietnamese Embassy’s commitment to supporting the restoration project and collaborating closely with Newhaven authorities and the museum. He also pledged to provide additional materials related to the Vietnamese leader. Both sides expressed their desire to further strengthen the historical ties and cooperation between Vietnam and Newhaven.

Graham Amy, Town Councillor and Chairman of Newhaven Museum, emphasized the importance of the exhibit in highlighting the connection between Ho Chi Minh and Newhaven. He noted that this shared history serves as a foundation for fostering continued friendship and collaboration between Vietnam and the town.
